YouTube

Supervised account or YouTube Kids, plus Restricted Mode.

⏱ Takes about 5 minutes

Why bother?

YouTube Shorts is just TikTok with a different colour. Restricted Mode hides explicit videos. For under-10s, YouTube Kids is a whole separate app.

YouTube Restricted Mode help →

Do this, in order

  1. 1

Decide: Kids app or supervised account?

Under 9 → YouTube Kids (a whole separate app, totally curated). 9–13 → Supervised account. 13+ → Restricted Mode is the best you'll get.
  2. 2

For under 9 — install YouTube Kids

App Store / Play Store. Set the age band on first launch. Pick the curated channels you want.
  3. 3

For 9–13 — open Family Link

Tap your kid → Controls → YouTube → Manage settings → choose Explore or Explore More (filtered).
  4. 4

For 13+ — on the kid's YouTube app

Profile → Settings → General → Restricted Mode ON.
  5. 5

    Also turn off Autoplay

Settings → Autoplay → off. Kills the "just one more video" loop.
  6. 6

    Pause Watch History weekly

Settings → Manage all history → Clear all watch history. Resets the algorithm.
  7. 7

    Bonus: install SafeGuard

Blocks Shorts and the homepage feed in Chrome — kid can still watch direct video links.

You did it. 🎉

Tell your kid you set this up, and why. It works way better when it's not a secret.
