Block bad sites on home Wi-Fi

Change your router DNS once. Every device on the Wi-Fi is protected.

โฑ Takes about 10 minutes

Why bother?

This is the trick the kids can't get around. The router decides which websites are even reachable. Set the router to use a family-safe DNS (free!) and porn and malware sites simply don't load โ€” on phones, laptops, consoles, smart TVs, anything.

Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 for Families โ†’

Do this, in order

  1. 1

    Find your router's address

On a laptop, open a browser and try 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1. One of them will load a login page.
  2. 2

    Log into the router

Username/password is usually printed on a sticker on the router. If you changed it and forgot, hold the reset pinhole for 10 seconds.
  3. 3

    Find DNS settings

Look for Internet โ†’ DNS, or Advanced โ†’ WAN โ†’ DNS. Every router is different โ€” search your router model + "change DNS" if stuck.
  4. 4

Switch from Automatic to Manual DNS

There'll be two boxes for Primary and Secondary DNS.
  5. 5

    Enter the family-safe addresses

Primary: 1.1.1.3 ยท Secondary: 1.0.0.3. This is Cloudflare's free family DNS โ€” blocks porn and malware.
  6. 6

    Save and reboot the router

Unplug for 30 seconds, plug back in.
  7. 7

    Test

On any device on the Wi-Fi, try pornhub.com. It should fail to load.
  8. 8

    Want stricter? Try OpenDNS FamilyShield

    Use 208.67.222.123 and 208.67.220.123 instead.

You did it. ๐ŸŽ‰

Tell your kid you set this up, and why. It works way better when it's not a secret.
