Talk to your kids

Free age-banded videos and scripts for the awkward chat.

โฑ Takes about 20 minutes

Why bother?

No filter is perfect. The best protection is a kid who knows what creepy looks like, knows you won't freak out if they tell you, and knows they can close the tab.

Thinkuknow (free videos by age) โ†’

Do this, in order

  1. 1

Pick the right resource for your kid's age

Under 8 โ†’ Thinkuknow Jessie & Friends. 8โ€“10 โ†’ Thinkuknow Play Like Share. 11โ€“13 โ†’ Thinkuknow Band Runner. 14+ โ†’ real talk on Common Sense Media.
  2. 2

    Watch the video together

Don't pre-warn them, don't make it a lecture. Just "hey, watch this with me for 5 minutes".
  3. 3

    Ask three questions afterward

    1) Has anything like that ever happened to you or a friend? 2) What would you do? 3) Would you tell me? (And mean it.)
  4. 4

    Promise no-blame reporting

Most kids who see bad stuff don't tell their parents because they're scared of losing their phone. Tell them they won't.
  5. 5

    Save the helplines

UK: NSPCC 0808 800 5000 ยท Childline 0800 1111 ยท US: 1-800-422-4453. Add to their phone contacts as "Help".
  6. 6

    Re-visit every 6 months

    What's safe at 10 isn't safe at 12. The conversation isn't one-and-done.

You did it. ๐ŸŽ‰

Tell your kid you set this up, and why. It works way better when it's not a secret.
